The pandemic and racial reckoning of the past year has been challenging for everyone, especially children and young people. Given the increases in anxiety and mental health concerns it is important now more than ever to develop generative spaces. This workshop series will present practical strategies and tools to support anti-racist teaching and learning across disciplines. Participants will learn strategies for engaging in difficult conversations in the classroom and gain tools to facilitate more equitable and culturally responsive learning environments in person or online

Navigating Challenging Conversations

Engaging in conversations about race, racism, privilege, equity and other social justice issues are necessary to begin to address persistent inequities in our relationships and institutions. However, many people find these conversations both emotionally and politically challenging. So how do you craft the right message, engage your audience, and achieve your desired results?
This workshop series offers an in-depth approach to understanding the skills, qualities, and strategies necessary to facilitate more productive conversations. Topics will include developing active listening skills, understanding our intentions, assumptions, and emotional triggers and accounting for intersectionality. Best strategies for building trust and more authentic relationships across differences will also be explored.

Race, Racism, and Implicit Bias

This workshop focuses on understanding our complicity and participation in systemic racism. Key topics include the concept of implicit bias and how it produces microaggressions, the impact of microaggressions on classroom, work, and social environments and evidence-based practices for addressing implicit biases.
